PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) is a buffered alkaline cleaner with active oxygen and exemplary cleaning capacity. It is safe to use and harms neither you, the environment nor the equipment. PBW is at least as effective as caustic soda but is completely free of its negative features. PBW is used by breweries for CIP (Cleaning in Place) and is also very popular among home-brewers. Recommended dosage for home-brewers is 2 oz per 5 gallons, or 57 g per 19 litres, or 0.3%. This corresponds to 2 tbsp per 10 litres. Breweries usually use 1-2 oz per gallon, or 0.75-1.5%, depending on degree of contamination. For lighter cleaning a lower concentration will suffice. Recommended contact time is 30 minutes for mashing, sparging and boiling vessels and barrels, and 5-10 minutes for hoses. Longer contact time than three hours can be dangerous to the equipment and especially plastic details which are much more sensitive than steel and glass. Recommended temperature: PBW can be used in a cold solution, but is more effective at higher temperatures. However, do not exceed 70 °C. Rinse with water afterwards.
